A minimum of thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
