A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the hours before Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which became a member in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Market statistics shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.

Yet these probabilities had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a sharp shift in betting activity right before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," commented a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other platform users also profited tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to politics.

This sector faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting space.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
