Trump Calls for Imprisonment of Chicago Leader and Illinois Governor as Military Forces Deploy in City

Ex-President Donald J. Trump on midweek demanded the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump posted on social media Wednesday morning. "Governor Pritzker as well!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic party.

These remarks come alongside the arrival of state military troops in the Chicago region following directives from the current government, notwithstanding vehement protests from Illinois authorities such as the governor and mayor.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump has sought to have a Black man unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on Wednesday. "I'm not going put."

Pritzker also replied via online channels, declaring: "I will not back down. Now Trump is demanding arrests of elected officials resisting his authority. What remains on the path to full-blown autocracy?"

As of midweek, National Guard troops from the Lone Star State had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation approximately 50 miles from Chicago, as the federal government advances with its hardline crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

The president has labeled Chicago a "dangerous disaster zone", even though official statistics indicate notable reductions in many offenses, including murders.

On Wednesday, 200 Texas National Guard troops were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with an additional three hundred state military forces readying for deployment, per sources. Officials reportedly stated the soldiers would avoid police functions but would secure ICE officers and government buildings.

Military personnel in combat attire with Texas national guard insignia were spotted at the US army reserve center in the town. Vehicles labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off portable toilets and essential items. Trailers were set up in rows. Additional fencing was placed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered flight restrictions over the army reserve center for safety concerns until early December.

Federal authorities has escalated deportation operations in the city in recent weeks, triggering demonstrations, particularly near an immigration center in a Chicago suburb.

Earlier this week, state and city initiated legal action against the administration, seeking to block the National Guard deployment, asking a federal judge to stop what they describe as "the president's proclaimed 'Battle'" on the city and state, calling it "illegal and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their case is scheduled for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also signed an directive on Monday banning federal immigration agents and others from using municipal facilities as operation bases for deportation efforts.

Pritzker has charged Trump of using troops as "staged tools" and "pawns".

At a news conference on Tuesday, Pritzker said that the president is trying to "rationalize and normalize the deployment of armed soldiers under his personal authority."

The historic federal law restricts the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. Yet, Trump has stated he would be prepared to invoke the Insurrection Act, which allows a commander-in-chief to send regular army in regions that are unable to suppress an insurrection or are defying national authority.

After beginning his new administration, the president has dispatched or discussed deploying military units to at least 10 cities, such as major metropolitan areas and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the military presence is essential to combat crime and defend immigration agents.

Statistics indicates that serious offenses across the US has decreased in recent years. In the city, for example, murders were reduced nearly one-third to 278 through late summer, according to law enforcement reports.

New survey data released on Wednesday found that the majority of US citizens oppose the sending of troops without an external threat.
